Case Study Gatwick Airport

Learn More About Gatwick Airport

Introduction

Gatwick Airport has been in partnership with SafeContractor since 2017, which has helped them to maintain the highest standards in their supply chain.

Challenge – Health and safety in innovation

The aviation industry is key to the day-to-day running of the global economy. Not only does it help get the world’s population from A to B, but it is also a huge component of global logistics for the trade of goods and helps to support $2.7 trillion (3.6%) of the world’s Gross Domestic Product1.

As aircraft turnaround times have become increasingly shorter, more activities are being undertaken in less time, often by different companies. As a result, a significant proportion of the serious accidents reported to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) occur during aircraft turnaround.

Whilst a significant number of accidents occur during turnaround, health and safety hazards do not stop here. There are countless hazards across the aviation industry for workers and customers, including:

  1. Risks from baggage handling tasks.
  2. Musculoskeletal disorders.
  3. Working at height.

What Gatwick’s contractors think of SafeContractor membership.

In 2019, Gatwick ran an independent survey into their contractor base to get their view on SafeContractor membership. Here are some key findings from the survey:

  1. Most contractors said that membership offered value for money.
  2. Over half of the contractors found new work opportunities after becoming certified.
  3. 9 out of 10 contractors completed registration within 24 hours.
  4. Over 90% of contractors found it easy to get certified.
  5. Over 90% of contractors find our technical support officers somewhat to extremely helpful.
  6. 96% of contractors found it easy to renew their certification.

Solution – Why supply chain visibility is essential for Gatwick

Gatwick Airport is one of the busiest in the UK, transporting over 46 million passengers and 113,000 metric tonnes of cargo in 2018. The airport employs around 3,000 people directly and has a total of 24,000 staff on the Gatwick campus across 250 different companies, as well as a further 12,000 jobs indirectly2.

With nearly 90% of staff contractors, supply chain visibility is an absolute must for the major international airport. Since 2017, they have partnered with SafeContractor to mitigate risk, demonstrate compliance, and reduce the admin burden of managing contractors.

This has enabled them to maintain the highest standards in their supply chain and it has also had a big impact on the companies that they work with and has been positively received by the contractors working on Gatwick sites.
